Maybe if I play a huge map I won't be able to get the cultural victory too easily. I still haven't been able to get to late game because I will win a cultural victory before I can get there, so no science victory for me either. I like having a ton of faith anyway so I can go theocracy in mid-game and create a massive army on command, but otherwise I probably won't bother. That changes everything! But I probably won't go for a religious victory again. didn't know you could heal your religious units. If you get an Apostle with the chance at the "Eliminates other religions in the target city" upgrade option, always choose that one. Never spend the last Spread Religion, as that removes the unit, whereas you can theological combat and heal over and over. You can then go heal the units at holy sites. Winning theological combat boosts your religion and reduces other religions in an area effect. More theological combat, less Spread Religion. It's just too random and doesn't feel right.Įach missionary or apostle you purchase increases the cost of the next one, so I found myself running out of faith frequently. Theocracy is almost a must for a religious victory, as the faith purchase discount is really helpful.Īlso, I really don't like the fractal map, but I will never have to play on it again. As noted by another poster, though, if you can convert a civ's holy city, they will spam missionaries and apostles of your religion and do some of the work for you, so maybe that's one way to do it. ![]() It's not one that I think works on larger maps, though, as there will be too many civs to convert. My takeaway is that turtling up is a viable tactic if you're going for a religious victory. I'm surprised the AI can take any cities at all given how incompetent it is at making use of ranged units. I was just defending myself, you bastards. ![]() Also, they really need to fix that whole thing where other civs declare war on you and then call you a warmonger. Walls and archers/crossbowmen were all I needed to hold back an attack, with one melee unit to tank hits.Īt one point 3 civs out of 6 declared war on me, and it wasn't too bad to hold them all off. The AI still sucks at war, especially with siege units there were many times the AI had a good shot at destroying one of my units (I never had iron so my warrior sat un-upgraded until I found niter so I could upgrade straight to musketmen) but didn't take it. I trapped Queen Victoria on a peninsula, so the Brits declared war on me multiple times, and since I was going for a religious victory, I just destroyed their army and then took the peace offering once they had no army left. I played as Gandhi who gets a bonus to faith when not at war, and only went after faith-boosting wonders. Each missionary or apostle you purchase increases the cost of the next one, so I found myself running out of faith frequently. A religious victory is a pretty interesting way to win, I've found, though I probably should have pushed even harder on holy sites and faith generation.
